Destiny 2, one of the pioneers in the “looter shooter” genre, has confirmed cross-play support beginning sometime in 2021. While there is no firm date for this feature at this time, fans may play with their friends across Stadia, PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X | S, PS4, and PS5.
Now with Destiny 2 being wholly free to play across platforms, this means regardless of what platform you and your friends are on, you’ll have access to a game to play with your friends. Stadia’s had much criticism due to its humble user base in many games, with Destiny 2 player counts being the vast minority of players.
Once this update goes live, Destiny 2 will not just be available to play on mobile phones for free via Stadia, but those who choose this avenue of play will still get to enjoy the multiplayer action title with friends. Ultimately, it seems Destiny 2 will be one of the most accessible multiplayer games to play on the market, requiring only a smartphone or a low-end laptop and an internet connection.
Since Destiny 2’s release, Bungie has been undergoing a restructure of the title’s monetization models and game elements, pivoting from a USD 60 title, now to a free-to-play title with cross-saves and upcoming cross-play support. Allowing users to play the same way regardless of what platform they’re on will let them pick up and play no matter where they are. With upcoming 5G networks, Stadia is now the best way to play games like Destiny 2 portably. Even Stadia free members can get started playing with friends.
With Destiny 2 joining the fray, companies finally realize that cross-play is beneficial not just to gamers, but to their bottom line. Giving more avenues of playing together helps expand their active player base, meaning they’ll have more sales of DLC and any other transactions available in the game. Hopefully, more titles will follow suit soon so you can play with your non-Stadia friends with ease,
